09Mar25: Just completed work on an important source of works by Milano and Julio Segni. The book is a Giralomo Scotto edition of 1546, v.7 containing early versions of 13 Milano ricercars and 12 ricercars by Segni. All were intabulated by Giovanni M. da Crema, presumably from some unknown mensural source. It is curious that some of the best lute music did not come originally from a tablature source. Obviously, Crema did a fine job of intabulating, because the result is brilliant.
The first Segni ricercar is a fragment, but both John Robinson and Wolfgang Hiller have constructed endings for it so as to create a playable piece, using another Segni ricercar (in the case of John Robinson) and a parody of the same ricercar in another key (by Wolfgang Hiller).
