25Jun24: Completed the first part of Louys de Moy’s “Le Petit Bouquet“, consisting of 20 lute songs in celebration of the marriage between Ulrich II of East Frisia and Juliana of Hesse-Darmstadt. Despite the glowing, even fawning, content of the songs, that alliance did not bode well for East Frisia, as the rulers lived a life of decadence while the people suffered. The music itself is rather pedestrian and careless in places, requiring some editing to avoid dissonances and nasty chord combinations. The latter half of one song (“Soyons plaisant“) is close to a literal copy of Campion’s “Follow thy fair sun“.
